A tomb now suffices him for whom the world was not enough.

Many pictures ahead.
Fair warning for everyone ^^

Going back on calendar, during August,
me and my family had to travel to my grandma's village some
kilometres away from our summer house.

This is one of my favourite birds, a beautiful
black crowned crane and i was so happy when i saw one from close
( actually 3 of them but this one was following me around, ready to take it's picture! )

Holy or not, i will always be fascinated by them.

Oh and that is my future house.
A big 2 stories mansion, very well preserved for it's age,
with a big yard separated into 3 parts ( frond, back and side )
it is surely a place i would live in a heart bit.

Haha the proud future owner :P

Those wooden stairs lead to the second floor
where you can see this enormous fan and that big window.
*starring the pictures ready to cry*...

And some history

I am not sure how many people know that, wherever you decide to dig up in Greece you will find ruins. Especially in Amphipolis ( very close to my summer house ) where there are so many Greek-Macedonia tombs, monuments, ruins etc etc. The Amphipolis Lion is a gorgeous, big memorial statue found in pieces in 1912. It has been restored and stands next to the old bridge of Strymonas river at the regional street Amphipolis-Serraiki Akti. In 1922 archaeologists found its base, upon which it was restored in 1936. It dates from the 4th century BC. In August 1916, British soldiers who were building fortifications at the bridge of Amphipolis found the marble parts of the lion and tried to transport them to the shore, in order to smuggle them to England. According to historians and archaeologists, the face of the Lion, which has always been a sacred symbol of Macedonians, was looking towards the city, thus expressing the importance and glory of it. Furthermore, according to a legend, its sculptor (whose identity is unknown), after finishing his work, which was also the peak of his career, faced an unpleasant surprise. The Lion missed its tongue. In desperation, the sculptor threw the Lion to the Strymonas river, so that no one would see it.

As i informed by my dad that day, archaeologists found a "new" Macedonian - Greek tomb.
No surprise here. They have done an amazing work in Amphipolis by discovering many treasures over the years and i will only pray that government will support them financially. I get the chills whenever i see ancient ruins.

New entry (2014) ; Apparently now they know (not 100% of course) where it stood.

  1. Wonderful pictures Magda! I enjoy seeing parts of your county through your eyes. I too love ruins and that was a very interesting history lesson about the great stone lion! I laughed at the part about the British trying to smuggle parts of it away, we do love our museums! I'm glad that they didn't though :)

    1. Hello there ^^ Well, thank you for saying that! I do love seeing your country through your posts! "Free travel" ^^ They did tried to take the whole statue but they couldn't, so they throw it or it fell on the river ( not quite sure 100% what happened ). That is from where astrologists found it.

  6. Funny thing they decided to throw a piece of art into the water. Can you imagine people decided to cover the great sphinx with sand just because they are not able to move it? Hahahah... By the way, I agree with Sandy about this type of posts. There´s something very nice about seeing other people´s homelands through the net, someday I´d like to make a little tour to the Greek islands. Being a big fan of Homer that´s a must!

    1. During war in general, aside the killing, burning, destroying etc, people did / do one more big cruelty. Taking or destroying historical things. My country, in additional to others as well, suffered from that even more. But we do have many more things to show and many more buried, just waiting ^^ I wish you one day to be able to come!! Yes i agree with that as well. One day we will see the things we like from close but now i am happy even seeing them in your posts ^^
